East Stroudsburg Area School District unveiled a new therapy space for students in Middle Smithfield Elementary School.
The elementary school is creating a sensory room for students with special needs. A sensory room is a therapeutic space that provides students with a personalized sensory input.
Sensory rooms help children calm and gain focus so they can better prepare for learning and interacting with their peers. In fact, they provide support services for students with a wide range of special needs.
The sensory room at Middle Smithfield Elementary school will have a positive impact on students, who will be better able to follow directions and spend more time on tasks. With that, statistics have shown a decrease in negative behaviors. In fact, students have shown to be very motivated and eager to learn.
The room will feature both calming spaces and interactive spaces to support all students. This includes those with autism, vision difficulties, language barriers, learning disabilities, emotional disturbances, and any student who needs a safe, quiet room to calm their body.
