Public_Relations

As a public relations major, I often get asked the question: “What exactly is PR?” Commonly under-credited, Public Relations (PR) boosts a business’s credibility. By doing so, it builds a strong relationship between a business and the public.

PR employers are responsible for keeping companies alive by helping them gain consumers and publicity. Hence the name, Public Relations. Check out these 5 tips on how to slay in the PR industry.

1. Writing Skills

Good grammar is not just a helpful skill to have, but it’s mandatory in the PR world. As an employer, you will most likely be writing a lot of press releases for a wide variety of different businesses. Grammar strengths and weaknesses can make or break a writing piece. Just misspelling the wrong word can confuse the reader and/or change the meaning of the point you are trying to get across.

Pro tip: Proofread, proofread and proofread again!

2. Be Creative

PR specialists are required to be creative at all times. Why you ask? Because PR employees are constantly thinking of new ways to stand out to the public. Whether it be with writing or coming up with new marketing strategies, PR employees need to bring plenty of creative passion and energy. Always go beyond what is expected!

3. Communication

Unless you choose a career that requires you to not deal with people, communication skills are a MUST. It’s important to express your thoughts and listen to others carefully. Not only does this skill occur face to face, but it’s helpful to know how to communicate through social media. Now, this is more than “liking” a status on Facebook. It is important to build a good image of your business. Monitor and participate in relevant conversations and don’t be afraid to respond to reviews, even if they are bad!

4. Gain Knowledge

This should be a no brainer considering the fact that a PR employee is responsible for the whole brand of a business. However, it’s good to gain background knowledge of multiple companies and what they want. A good way to do this is to do research on the business you are currently working with so you can know what they stand for. How can you represent a business without knowing what/who you are working with?

5. Provide Solutions

Problems will happen. Sometimes there is no way to prevent them! It is highly necessary to remain on your feet 24/7 to come up with proper solutions to a crisis. This ties with creativity, but focuses more about dealing with issues that arise suddenly. The whole goal of PR is to remain a positive reputation for a business. Be ready to dodge bullets!
