Whether we like it or not, social media will be around for a very long time.
Not only can platforms like Instagram and Twitter be addicting for passing time, but media is a huge influence in the public relations world. Think about it. How do majority of millennials get their information? How do people raise awareness for an organization? It all ties down to social media! Besides the obvious reasons, here are 4 ways on how social media increased the game for PR agencies all over.
Using hashtags to promote a campaign is probably the smartest way to gain recognition. Back in 2015, World Wildlife Fund created #EndangeredEmoji campaign to highlight the ongoing rate of endangered animals. For every emoji of an endangered animal tweeted, WWF added 10 cents to a voluntary monthly donation. In result, the campaign had 559,000 mentions between May and August 2015.
2. Host a Challenge
This technique is more than just a hashtag. Challenges are a fun way to get attention towards a certain campaign and are proven to succeed. Back in 2014, the Ice Bucket Challenge was a way to raise awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Starting off as a small PR project in Massachusetts, it is safe to say that the challenge of people throwing freezing cold water over their heads took off just within 24 hours. Why was it so successful? Reciprocity, visual proof, celebrities participating, and it also doesn’t hurt that it is for a good cause. Everyone loves a good challenge!
3. Relationships with Influencers
Perhaps one of the most common ways brands are getting their reputation out there is through social media influencers. More specifically, businesses target celebrities that are active and have a large following on social media. For example, the Kardashians are known to advertise Sugar Bear Hair gummies on their Instagram accounts. Why did the company choose them? Because who doesn’t want hair like Kim K?! If taking a gummy bear each day will get my hair healthy and shiny, I am all for it.
4. Quick and Easy
Overall, social media is probably the easiest way for any business looking to get their reputation out there. Businesses are more known to hire a college student studying journalism and media to manage their PR on the internet rather than spend money on a PR firm they cannot afford.
However, many downsides can come with the fast word-spreading on social media. Brands that take months up to a year creating a positive image can have their reputation ruined within seconds. This is the power of social media. It is extremely important to know who you are working with and to be cautious on social media at all costs!
